If a child's immunisation record isn't current in the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR), two separate things happen — Family Tax Benefit (FTB) Part A is reduced for that child, and Child Care Subsidy (CCS) stops for that child entirely. The FTB Part A reduction is a fixed per-fortnight amount per unimmunised child. The CCS one is usually the bigger financial hit for families using care, because CCS is not paid at all for a child who does not meet the requirement.
Most parents notice weeks after the reduction started, then spend a stressful afternoon on hold to Services Australia trying to work out what happened.
This guide walks through what each rule does, how to check your record in under a minute, and the specific role NestWise plays in catching this before it costs you.
The two rules, kept separate
Family Tax Benefit Part A — for a child who does not meet the immunisation requirement, the fortnightly Family Tax Benefit Part A rate for THAT child is reduced by a set per-fortnight amount, indexed annually. The rest of your Family Tax Benefit Part A continues. NestWise does not currently calculate this reduction — Services Australia shows the exact amount on your payment statement.
Child Care Subsidy — for a child who does not meet the immunisation requirement, Child Care Subsidy is not paid for THAT child at all. Sessions still cost the full fee until the record is current. This is the larger cost for most families using childcare.
To meet the requirement in either case, the child must:
- Have an immunisation record on the AIR that is up to date for their age, OR
- Have a recorded medical exemption from a GP (through the AIR), OR
- Be on a documented catch-up schedule the AIR knows about.
The current fortnightly-reduction rule for Family Tax Benefit Part A began on 1 July 2018, when it replaced the earlier "No Jab, No Pay" rule that had only affected the end-of-year Family Tax Benefit Part A supplement. Both mechanisms still catch families off guard because the check runs quietly.
The three quiet failure modes
1. Moved GP + records never transferred. Your kid got their 18-month shots at the old clinic, the new GP doesn't have those in their system, they don't appear on the AIR under your child's Medicare number.
2. Immunisation records not linked to Medicare. Some clinics forget to add the child's Medicare card details when recording a shot. The vaccination happened; the AIR just doesn't know it happened to your child.
3. Scheduled shot is overdue. The next age-band vaccination is due and has not been booked. Services Australia's automated check flags it and the reduction applies from the next fortnight.
Every one of these is fixable in a single GP appointment — but only if you notice before either payment for that child has been affected.
How to check your child's AIR record — 60 seconds
- Log into myGov → Medicare.
- Select Immunisation history statement.
- Choose your child from the linked family.
- Look at "Immunisation status" — should say Up to date with a green tick.
If it says Not up to date, download the statement and take it to your GP. They can update the AIR directly during your appointment.
What NestWise does
NestWise's Family Tax Benefit hub checks whether it has an immunisation status recorded for each of your children. Where it does not, it says so on the hub, names the child, and tells you exactly where the record lives — myGov, then Medicare, then Immunisation history.
Once the status is recorded against that child, the prompt stops. NestWise does not read the National Immunisation Program schedule, work out which shots are due at which age, calculate the specific Family Tax Benefit Part A reduction, or re-check anything on a timer. It knows whether you have told it the record is current, and it asks when you have not.
The point is not to duplicate Services Australia's system. The point is to make the time between the AIR check firing and you noticing as short as possible — so a missing record can be fixed at the next GP visit rather than after either payment has been reduced for weeks.
The Guardian frame — why NestWise flags this at all
The calm-protector product principle: NestWise watches for the things that quietly cost families money without any warning from the government systems. Immunisation records fit exactly. No app forces you to fix it — but the flag being there when you next open NestWise means you can, before either payment is reduced.
Every family on Family Tax Benefit Part A or Child Care Subsidy benefits from this check. Recording the status takes 30 seconds.
What to do right now
- Log into myGov and pull the Immunisation history statement for each child.
- If everything is up to date, you're done — record that against the child in NestWise and the prompt stops.
- If anything is overdue or missing, book a 15-minute GP appointment to update the AIR.
- Come back to NestWise once the shot is recorded and update the status against that child.
Not medical advice. Immunisation decisions are between you and a qualified health professional. This guide describes how Services Australia's immunisation requirements affect Family Tax Benefit Part A and Child Care Subsidy — it does not recommend a schedule.
