When a parent has more than one child support case, Services Australia applies Formula 3. Here is how it works and where to start your estimate.

How this calculator is built
Built by an Australian Chartered Accountant — the same engine the paid NestWise dashboard runs. Every rate table is verified against the source below every 1 July, 20 March, and 20 September and covered by a 200+ scenario regression suite.

What is Formula 3?

Formula 1 (the basic Australian child-support formula) applies when both parents have only one child support case with each other. Formula 3 replaces it when a parent has multiple cases — for example, children from two different relationships.

Under Formula 3, Services Australia works out each case separately using the paying parent's income + the Cost of Children table, then allocates a portion of their capacity to each case. The mechanics are the same as Formula 1 for one case at a time — Formula 3 just handles the allocation between cases.

How to estimate your total

  1. Estimate each case independently using the Australian Child Support calculator (Formula 1).
  2. Note that Formula 3 allocates a share of the paying parent's capacity to each case — the sum may differ from Formula 1 estimates added together.
  3. The connected multi-case view lives on the paid NestWise dashboard — /dashboard/child-support — with FTB-A Maintenance Income Test integration.

When Formula 3 applies

  • A parent has children with more than one former partner
  • A parent has multiple simultaneous assessments open with Services Australia
  • The other parent(s) in each case have their own independent income + care %
