Family tree + kids — what you can do

The Nest is your family surface — parents, kids, extended family, care team, pets. Every person is a real profile you can tap into, edit inline, or clean up if things went sideways during setup.

1. The tree at a glance

The Nest at /dashboard/nest shows a two-generation family tree: you (and partner if you have one) at the top, kids in a row beneath, joined by lines. Extended family (grandparents, aunts, godparents) sit as chips below. Care team (GP, midwife, dog sitter, etc.) collapses out of the way in its own row. Pets get their own row too.

2. Add a kid

Tap + Add kid in the kids row. Two options reveal:

  • A kid who’s here — already born. Just first name + date of birth.
  • Baby coming — expected. Sex + due date + count (twins/triplets supported). Renders as a dashed-outline chip until baby arrives.

Duplicate safety: if you type a name that matches an existing kid’s date of birth, we prompt “Same kid?” before creating a new row. This catches spelling variants (“Lachlan” vs “Lachie”) that used to slip through and create ghost duplicates.

3. Per-kid profile page

Tap any kid chip → land on /dashboard/nest/<their-id>. The top of the page is a summary card with photo (tap to upload), preferred name + age + school context, and inline nickname edit. Below: Basics, Health, Milestones + moments, Documents, Care + school, Entitlements + tools.

4. The age-5 school prompt

When a kid crosses age 5 and there’s no school on file, the per-kid page shows a quick check: “Is [name] in school yet?” with three chips. Yes captures school name + year level. Starting next year captures the date so we re-prompt at the right time. Not for a while sets their life stage to early-years and stops nagging.

Why this matters: without a life stage on file, the app treats every kid as “in childcare” which was messing up CCS calcs for older kids. Setting stage properly (preschool / primary / high / tertiary / left) means every entitlement, calculator, and prompt surfaces the RIGHT thing for each kid.

5. Edit mode — clean up mistakes fast

Tap Edit in the top-right of the tree card. Kids row flips to edit mode:

  • Small × on each chip → archive with confirm (record kept, moves off active tiles)
  • Tap the label → inline rename input. Blur or Enter saves. Escape cancels.
  • Photo upload stays available the same way as view mode

Archive is reversible from Family memory. No hard deletes without you asking for one.

6. Extended family, care team, pets

Below the tree, three separate rows. Extended family = anyone household-related but not kid-specific. Care team collapses (doctors, teachers, sitters, dog walkers). Pets get their own row with species icons.

7. Life events

The Something changed? button below the tree opens the life-event picker: separated, partnered, baby coming, baby arrived, kid moved out, plus sensitive changes (loss, custody, DV support) behind a discreet reveal per our sensitivity defaults. Each event routes to a proper flow that updates your profile + entitlement calcs, not just a redirect.
