Scan a bill — what we extract

A bill scan saves you typing five fields. Snap the bill (or upload a PDF), confirm the extracted figures, save. The image goes to Claude Vision, the structured response comes back, and the file is never stored at rest.

1. Open the scanner

Bottom-nav Scan button → tap Bill. The camera opens directly; on desktop the file picker opens. You can also navigate to /dashboard/bills/scan.

2. What we read

  • Provider name (e.g. Origin Energy, Telstra, NRMA)
  • Amount due
  • Due date
  • Frequency — quarterly, monthly, annually (when shown on the invoice)
  • Category — utility / insurance / rates / subscription / strata / school / mortgage / childcare gap

3. The OCR engine

Bills run through Claude Haiku first (fast + cheap, ~90% of bills). If the result has low confidence or missing fields, the same image retries on Claude Sonnet (deeper reasoning, catches blurry receipts or faded prints). The badge under the result tells you which model handled it.

Limits: 5 MB max per file. JPEG, PNG, WebP, or PDF. Multi-page PDFs work — we read the first 1-2 pages. If the bill spans more pages, photograph just the summary page for cleaner extraction.

4. Review + save

Every extracted field is editable before save. Common edits:

  • Bill name → make it human ("Power" instead of "AGL Energy Sales NSW")
  • Frequency → quarterly bills often print only the due date; pick the cadence yourself
  • Payment account → which card/account it's paid from (powers the cancel-card impact view)
  • Tax deductible toggle → work-related bills roll up to your EOFY tax-summary

5. After save

The bill lands in your Bills list, hits the 12-month forecast on the Calendar, and shows up on the dashboard's "Bills due soon" tile when its next_due_date is within 7 days. If you marked it auto-paid, NestWise skips the "Mark paid" reminder but still surfaces it in the forecast.

6. Privacy

The photo is uploaded to NestWise's server, forwarded to Claude (Anthropic) for extraction, then the buffer is discarded at the end of the request. We never persist the file. Same policy applies to wills scans, school notes, and Centrelink letters.
